Week in Review: Sunday, January 8, 2023
This is the first edition of the revamped Partisan Playground newsletter! It has been over a year since the last edition, so if you would not like to receive these emails, please feel free to unsubscribe. Otherwise, please share this newsletter with others that you think may find it interesting.
This newsletter has two goals:
Provide a high-level view of the media landscape. With so much content to consume on the internet, it can be easy to lose sight of the big picture. It is worthwhile to come up for air and see how the top stories have evolved over the past few days and how they are being covered by liberal and conservative outlets.
Experiment with how AI can produce interesting and useful content in an automated way. This newsletter is largely produced by prewritten code and AI, with a human making edits before it is sent. The goal is to see how well this works and potentially apply this pattern to other use cases.
You can expect the content of this newsletter to evolve over time based on experimentation and user feedback. Please reply to this email with feedback if you have any!
What does the news landscape look like?
Kevin McCarthy was the top story throughout last week, followed by Damar Hamlin. The January 6th anniversary and the latest jobs report entered the news cycle on Friday.
This is how the coverage level of each story differed on each "side" of the media. Media bias ratings are from @AllSidesNow:
Kevin McCarthy / Trump (42% more on the left)
Jan 6 / Biden (88% more on the left)
Hamlin / NFL (21% more on the right)
This is how articles from liberal and conservative outlets were distributed over the past five days amongst the top stories.
Conservative outlets used these words more than liberal outlets:
illegal (8.8x)
border (4.0x)
desantis (1.7x)
Liberal outlets used these words more than conservative outlets:
power (0.9x)
ukrainian (0.7x)
election (0.6x)
