What does the news landscape look like?

Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis have remained the top news story over the past five days. The rest of the top ten is fairly evenly split between numerous stories.

This is how the top stories were covered on each side of the media yesterday:

  • Trump / DeSantis / 2024 (90% more on the left)

  • DC crime bill / Biden (77% more on the right)

  • Abortion / pills (9% more on the left)

Media bias ratings are from AllSides.

This is how articles from liberal and conservative outlets were distributed over the past five days amongst the top stories.

Liberal outlets used these words more than conservative outlets:

  • dominion (14.8x)

  • murdoch (9.3x)

  • network (6.1x)

Conservative outlets used these words more than liberal outlets:

  • percent (6.3x)

  • china (2.9x)

  • 2024 (1.8x)

What is happening in the top stories?

Now for a deep dive into our top three stories, starting with…

Trump / DeSantis / 2024

  • Former President Trump attacked Fox News for underplaying a poll showing him with a double-digit lead on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a potential 2024 Republican presidential primary match-up.

  • A new poll released on Tuesday showed Trump leading President Biden in a hypothetical 2024 matchup, while Biden leads former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley

DC crime bill / Biden

  • Congress is expected to vote on a measure to reject a sweeping rewrite of DC’s criminal code, which was approved unanimously last year.

  • Black Democratic leaders in Congress are concerned that President Biden’s desire to look strong on crime could undermine efforts to make the criminal justice system fairer to people of color.

  • House Democrats are ready for a Biden 2024 campaign, with Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) expressing her desire for him to make the bid official.

Abortion / pills

  • Walgreens announced it will not start selling an abortion pill in 20 states that had warned of legal consequences if it did so.

  • Mifepristone is a drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2000 to end pregnancy, when used in combination with a second drug, misoprostol.

  • Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said he plans to sign a measure that would effectively ban abortion clinics from operating in the state.

  • The White House called it “dangerous and unacceptable” for Republicans to target pharmacies for offering abortion pills.
